EMPTIES: How I used up £225 worth of Makeup in 2019

12:30

Following on from last years post where I managed to use up 19 makeup items totalling over £250, I thought that I would repeat the experiment throughout 2019 in a bid to maximise my makeup collection. I've continued to be strict on myself and my makeup purchasing habits by only buying new makeup when I have used up the last of that item.

The premise of this post was inspired by Cosmo where Laura came to the realisation that she had managed to use up over £1000 worth of makeup in a year. Based on the shock of last years amount, I was keen to know whether the value of my makeup empties from 2019 has gone up or down over the year. I've kept an eye on what makeup products I've managed to use up and jotted them in my drafts to see how much makeup I really use up in a year.
Foundations (5)
4 x CYO Long Lasting Foundation - 102 = £7.50 x 3 = £30
Dream Urban Cover (*Gifted) - 095 Fair Porcelain - £10.99
Total: £40.99

It's not difficult to spot what my favourite foundation of 2019 (and 2018) has been. If you have yet to try the CYO Long Lasting Foundation, I'd strongly urge you to give it a go. It's so easy to layer up for either a light or heavier coverage, whilst still being natural looking on the skin. I haven't looked at trying another foundation since trying this and I've just repurchased another bottle to start in 2020.

Concealers (2)
Revolution Supersize Conceal & Define - £7
Makeup Obsession Mega Conceal - £7
Total: £14

I was shocked that I've only managed to use up two concealers this year, however, it does show that, due to the size of these concealers, that they are excellent value for money and will last for months in your makeup bag, even when using daily.

Powders (2)
Revolution Luxury Powder - Banana - £5
CYO Fixing Powder - Clear - £4
Total: £9

In 2019 I found myself reaching for loose powders over pressed powders for versatile coverage, either dusting lightly with a brush or pressing in with my Real Techniques Powder Sponge. I enjoyed using both of these powders, and already repurchased (soon to run out) the CYO Fixing Powder.

Primer (1)
Too Faced Hangover Face Primer And Booster (*Gifted) - £26
Total: £26

I was gutted that I ran out of this primer so quickly. This feels so hydrating on the skin and leaves a perfect smooth base for your makeup.

Bronzer (1)
Ted Baker Bronzer (from Palette) - £3
Total: £3

Eyeshadow (4)
2True Eyeshadow Dazzler (No.10) - £1.99
MAC Satin Taupe - £14
Covergirl Shimmer Eyeshadow - £1 equivalent
L'Oreal Infallible Pressed Pigment - £12.10 (Amazon)
Total: £29.09

I'm so pleased that I managed to use up 4 eyeshadows this year and hope to continue to use more of my eyeshadow palettes next year. I am, however, gutted that I've now run out of my favourite pressed pigment from L'Oreal and will struggle to get hold of this without paying stupid fees getting this shipped from America. If you can still get hold of the L'Oreal pressed pigments then I'd strongly urge you to give them a go.

Highlighters (2)
NYX Palette (*Gifted)- £16.00
Maybelline Facestudio Chrome Extreme - 500 Sparkling Citrine (*Gifted) - £8.99
Total: £24.99

I loved using both of these highlighters. The NYX palette is so versatile and I was impressed that I was able to completely use up each shade in the palette. When I run out of my new MAC highlighter, I'll definitely be considering repurchasing the NYX palette.

Blusher (1)
MAC Harmony - £19.50
Total: £19.50

I'd lusted over MAC blushes for ages, however, this wasn't anything major to write home about. I loved the shade, but found that the quality didn't differ too much from highstreet alternatives.

Mascara (3)
Too Faced Damn Girl 24-Hour Mascara (*Gifted)- £22
Rimmel Volume Colourist Double Act (*Gifted)- £9.99
Primark P.S Love Fake It - £2.50
Total: £34.49

I am gutted that the Too Faced mascara dried up so quickly. None of these mascara were stand out products this year, so my mission for 2020 is to find a new favourite mascara.

Lipbalm (1)
EOS Lipbalm (*Gifted) - £3.99
Total: £3.99

I'm shocked that I've only managed to use up one lip balm this year, however, I appear to have 4/5 lip balms partially finished in my bags, car and jacket pockets, so I imagine they'll all run out at once.

Lipstick (2)
MAC Modesty Lipstick - £17.50
Natural Collection Rose Bud Lipstick - £1.99
Total: £19.49

Running out of lipstick does seem like a miracle, and this year I've managed to use up two. I'm on a mission to be more experimental with lipstick again for 2020 and hopefully finish at least another lipstick as using up 2 lipsticks in 2 years does seem like a poor effort.

Total: £224.54

This really is an interesting exercise that helps me to keep making full use of the makeup items in my collection and to make sure I'm getting good use out of the items I own. I had done a Kon-Mari inspired declutter at the start of 2019 to pare down my collection, but am still pleased that I managed to use up 24 items this year.

With a few new additions that I received as gifts for christmas, I’m definitely going to be doing a makeup switchup for the new year to try and reach for some old (neglected) favourites and look to use up more lipsticks and eyeshadows from my collection, as these continue to be the items that dominate my makeup collection and are the trickiest to hit pan on.

How much makeup have you used up in 2019?
